چکیده
Goals and Significance The long-term goal of this research is to develop tactual aids for persons who are profoundly deaf or deaf-blind to serve as a substitute for hearing in the reception of speech and environmental sounds. This research can contribute to improved speech reception and production, language competence, and environmental-sound recognition in such individuals. This research is also relevant to the development of improved tactual and haptic displays for a broad class of applications (including virtual-environment and teleoperator systems in addition to sensory aids).

The Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE), founded in 1946, is the Institute’s first interdisciplinary research laboratory. RLE grew out of the wartime MIT Radiation Laboratory and was formed to bring together physicists and electrical engineers to work on problems in electromagnetic radiation, circuits, and specialized vacuum tubes. Over the years, RLE’s research interests have branched in ...

متن کاملTactile Modulation of Emotional Speech Samples
Traditionally only speech communicates emotions via mobile phone. However, in daily communication the sense of touch mediates emotional information during conversation. The present aim was to study if tactile stimulation affects emotional ratings of speech when measured with scales of pleasantness, arousal, approachability, and dominance. In the Experiment 1 participants rated speech-only and s...

متن کاملSpeech communication for the deaf: visual, tactile, and cochlear-implant.
A review is given of current research and development on electronic devices to aid speech communication for the deaf. Visual and tactile displays are compared with stimulation of hearing via electrodes implanted in the cochlea. Specific comparative performance data are given for cochlear electrical implants versus tactile aids.
